Yelp reviews and your tax and accounting firm

It’s not uncommon to look to online reviews for validation prior to purchasing an item or services. But are all reviews created equal when it comes to tax and accounting firms? Yelp is one of the more frequently used review services/apps, but the way it works is a little different than what you might expect. We’ll cover the Yelp review basics so you understand how your tax and accounting business may be affected, as well as where you should focus your time when it comes to reviews.

Should I ask for reviews on Yelp for my tax and accounting firm?

Short answer: no. According to Yelp, “The businesses that do best on Yelp are the ones that provide a great customer experience to everyone who walks in the door without any expectation or encouragement that they write a review.” And with that philosophy, you technically can’t request reviews on Yelp to help boost your business.

The good news is, the Yelp market isn’t saturated or focused on tax and accounting businesses. In fact, more than 30 percent of Yelp reviews fall under the restaurant and shopping category. While Yelp reviews play some importance, it’s probably not where you want to focus your time.

It’s a good idea to check to see if you’ve claimed your Yelp business page and if you have existing Yelp reviews. To do this, you simply claim your page from the Yelp website and follow the directions. This walks you through finding your business on Yelp and how to use the badge/icon to send people to your business listing. That way, you can invite people to visit and take a look at your page without directly asking for reviews. You can also check out Yelp’s tips for business owners.

Where should I spend time growing reviews that will help my tax and accounting firm?

Unlike Yelp, Google My Business is a great place to request reviews. The more you can grow reviews, the more authority you’ll have online. This helps your business thrive without having to do extra marketing.

Claiming your Google My Business account is free and easy to do. Once you’re set up with Google My Business, it’ll start helping your business show up higher in the list of Google search results. And once you start getting Google reviews, they’ll appear in Google Maps. This means that people will be able to get information right in the maps app.
